Abstract
A new modified Alban´s caries activity test was designed through standardization of measurement, modification of saliva sampling method, and alteration of pH and composition of medium. The medium was composed of 2% glucose, 0.4% beef extract, 0.004% bromocresol green, 0.5% NaCl and 1.5% agar. The pH of medium was adjusted to pH 4.8 by 0.1 N lactic acid solution. 10ml of the medium was poured into the capped test tube and then autoclaved. At the specimen sampling, the subjects were instructed to chew one stick of sugared gum for one minute. Stimulated: saliva of subject was dropped directly into the test tube. All tubes were incubated at 37°C for 96 hours. The length of the discolored medium was scored as 1 for 1 cm, 2 for 2cm, and so forth. Three or four day´s scores were added together to make the 72, hour´s score or the 96´ hour´s score. The caries experience and caries, activity,.of.269 second grade elementary school children were examined. There was, significant correlation between caries experience and caries activity score. Pearson, correlation coefficient between dDfFt index and the caries activity test score was 0.340 at 72 hours score and 0.361 at 96 hour´s score. There was significant difference of the caries experience between high caries activity group and low caries activity group. Thee most high correlation between caries experience and test, score was observed in the subgroup; which had high fFT rate and-low caries activity.
